Growth of a Leader

Be Fully Engaged In Life
January 9, 2008

It’s kind of sad when people allow themselves to get in a rut and never climb out. They often miss the best that life has to offer.

In contrast, teachable people are fully engaged in life. They get excited about things. They are interested in discovery, discussion, application and growth. There is a definite relationship between passion and potential.

One philosopher coined it this way: “Never let a day pass without look at some perfect work of art, hearing some great piece of music and reading, in part, some great book.”

Great advice! The more engaged you are, the more interesting life will be. The more you learn and explore, the greater your potential for growth.

Personal Growth Plan
March 6, 2008

Do you have a plan for personal growth? Working hard and putting in long hours is admirable, but it doesn’t insure personal growth. Neither does promotion. I salute someone who gets a deserved promotion, but getting a new title doesn’t always translate into new growth.

What will you do today, this week, this month, this year to actively grow? What book will you read? What trip will you take? What interview will you do with someone you look up to? What CD will you listen to before the end of the month to help you on your growth journey? What conference are you going to attend that’ll stretch you as a leader?

To grow spiritually, to grow as a follower of Christ – that’s the goal…but I gotta ask you, what’s the plan?

Create a Growth Environment
March 7, 2008

If you possess any kind of leadership role, you should create a growth environment in your role that prompts and encourages personal growth and development. You can make people who work for you or with you better if you’re creating an environment that discusses and evaluates things that can make the workplace better.

There’s a menu of items you could offer to co-workers; books and CDs, that simply improve the quality of life where you spend a good part of your day. So, next time you read a good book on leadership, why not go out and buy two or more for your colleagues – ask them to read it, and then offer opinions and listen to what they have to say on what they learned. It’s a great way to start a growth environment at the office!

Growth Determines Who You Are
April 23, 2008

Leaders face the danger of contentment when they embrace the status quo. After all, if a leader already possesses influence and has achieved a level of respect, why should they keep growing?

Well, try these answers on for size. Your growth determines who you are. Who you are determines who you attract. Who you attract determines the success of your organization.

If you want to grow your organization, you have to remain teachable. The Bible tells us that we reap what we sow. So, what kind of crop are you reaping in your life?

When was the last time you did something for the very first time?
